- 84th AAPT Annual Meeting and Technical Sessions
The 2009 Annual Meeting was held at the Marriott City Center Hotel in Minneapolis, on March 15-18, 2009. There were 208 attendees from 17 countries around the world, representing suppliers, consultants, contractors, universities, government agencies and other researchers. Their common interest is research into materials and methods on how to build better roads.
Highlights
A Government Industry Forum was held on Sunday, March 15. The following subjects were discussed:
"Summary and Discussion of Ongoing Activities for Increasing RAP and Shingles in HMA"
Audrey Copeland and Andrea Kvasnak; and“Issues Associated with the Design, Specification, and Performance of Warm-Mix Asphalt”
Ray Bonaquist and Matthew Corrigan
The Technical Session included 23 papers, which were grouped into the following 5 sessions: “Models to Predict Behavior of Mixture and Pavement”, “Advanced Characterization of Bituminous Binders and Sealants”, “Materials Characterization and Modeling”, “Stiffness and Deformation Testing for Asphalt”, “Innovations, New Procedures, and New Ideas for Existing Paving Techniques”
There was also an International Forum which was co-sponsored by AAPT and ISAP. The following topics were covered:UPDATE on New ISAP TC Asphalt Pavement & Environment APE
Manfred PartlRILEM TC 206-ATBAdvanced Testing & Evaluation UPDATE
-TG2 Mix Design & Compaction
-TG3 Mechanical Testing
Hussain BahiaTC Constitutive Modeling & RILEM TC-210-CAP Cracking of Asphalt Pavements UPDATE
Tom ScarpasSMA Early Age Friction & Mix Characteristics – Ontario Study
Kai TamNew RILEM TC NBM Nanotechnology Based Bituminous Materials
Gordon Airy, Bjorn Birgisson
Finally, there was a Symposium Session, titled "The Ideal Asphalt Pavement."Through decades of practical experience and research, much information has been generated on the best practices for materials selection, design, and construction of asphalt pavements. The first Strategic Highway Research Program brought us the Superpave mix design system which has focused much attention on the selection of materials, especially asphalt binders. The use of Stone Matrix Asphalt (SMA) and Open-Graded Friction Courses (OGFC) has provided very durable and safe pavement surfacing. Long-life or Perpetual Pavement design has given the industry a way to ensure the longevity of pavements by confining distresses to the surface of the pavement, allowing for periodic economical surface renewal while avoiding reconstruction. This symposium aims to distill the accumulated information on how to ensure an asphalt pavement is the best it can be in terms of performance and economics.
Materials Selection – Adam Hand, Granite Construction
Pavement Design – John Harvey, University of CA - Davis
Performance – Harold Von Quintus, ARA
Economics – Carlos Rosenberger, Asphalt Institute
Each of the sessions included presentations by experts in the field followed by open discussions. The papers and discussions will be published in Volume 78 of the AAPT Journal. There were 57 paper offers for the March 2009 AAPT Meeting. The Board of Directors developed the technical sessions from these offers.President James Moulthrop is encouraging all members to contact potential new members and request them to apply for membership. Please print the membership form and the required qualifications.
- AAPT's Annual Meeting
